James Cameron’s Avatar – The Game

If you own a Wii and are looking for a new game to play, you might be drawn to buy Avatar: The Game. If you’ve seen the movie you know what a success it was as far as the box-office, so you could assume the game would be a success too. However, the game, at least on Wii, is lacking in several areas.

Overall, the presentation of the game is not bad. The graphics are, for the most part, fairly clear and detailed. However, during intense action scenes, you can really notice the choppiness of the graphics, and it can become distracting. I don’t know if this is due to the game’s graphics, or the Wii itself. Either way, it is very frustrating to be distracted by this game’s often sub-par graphics.

If you’re looking for a good story line, look elsewhere. The game does not follow the story line of the movie, but instead follows the life of an alien, and tells a different story entirely. The voice acting is rather poorly done, and the emotions are corny and underworked. It’s one of those games where you just have to skip the cut scenes so you don’t get bored. Of course some of the cut scenes are worth watching, simply because of the graphics. The game is not great, but I will give it credit for the vivid graphics in some sections. Any time there is not much action going on, you can really step back and enjoy the view of the game. When this game looks good, it looks great!

The gameplay itself is not bad, and is in fact one of Avatar’s strong points. The controls feel natural and are easy to get used to, and are fully responsive unlike some other games. The normal gameplay consists mostly of running around on foot, attacking humans and securing stolen artifacts. There are also sections where you will get to ride gigantic winged creatures. The flying system was done pretty well, and you can use the Wii nun chucks to fly the creature. You can also play multiplayer with a friend just by connecting another remote, but be warned – the camera does not go to split-screen, so you will have to share the screen space. This would be fine, but it gets fairly disorienting when you’re in the middle of a battle and the camera keeps jumping around.

To me, this game feels very unfinished. It feels like the developers didn’t have to time to finish the things they started, and the game really suffered because of that. The game is not horrible, but unless you’re willing to deal with a lot of glitches and flaws, I don’t see many people playing this game more than once through. It’s also fairly short, so it’s not really a great buy if you want a game that will last you a while.
